We Dream of Blue Whales – Foroyar

‘Foroyar’ is the second part of the triptych, ‘We Dream of Blue Whales’, showing the journey I took while on a residency sailing between Iceland to Sweden via the Faeroe Islands. The map explores how we use stories – travellers’ tales in many cases, to locate ourselves. All the contemporary detail was overheard or gathered by interview and much of the historical detail was inspired by the ancient Carta Marina – full of stories of fantastic sea monsters swimming the North Atlantic.
This section of the map focuses on the Faeroe Islands – Foroyar in Faeroese. It is the home of the Grindadrap – a traditional communal hunt of pilot whales. The main panel is surrounded by portraits of Faeroese fishermen from photographs exhibited at the Faeroese Natural History Museum.
This piece was shown in the exhibition ‘The Whale Road’ in March 2015 at Onca Gallery, Brighton.
